THE LEGEND OF THE BOY WHO LEARNED FROM WOLVES
There is a story that Grandfather told to the young children.
He told the children what they were supposed to learn, in the story.
It was his custom to tell the story and let the hearer come to his or her own conclusion.
This is the story.
There was a young child in a Indian village who wanted to become a great hunter and a great warrior
also to become very wise so that he might help his people.
Very noble ambitions indeed, but how could he learn these things he needed
to know and become such a person?
He would often pretend to be such a person only to have his playmates laugh at him, as did the adults.
This would make the boy very unhappy.
Oh how he wanted to cry, but that would only make matters worse, after all great warriors do not cry.
So often, he would slip away into the woods to be alone.
On such a time he had gone into the woods, and with on one around to see, cried himself to sleep.
He didn’t know how long he had slept but when he awoke, to his horror
there was a pack of wolves staring at him.
He began to shake with terror. He tried to scream but nothing came out of his mouth.
Then to his amazement the largest and most powerful looking wolf of them all, began
to speak.
Do not be afraid he began, for we only want to help. We have often heard you talking to yourself,
wishing to become a great warrior and become very wise so that you might help your people, just as today
when you cried yourself to sleep.
We shall tell you the secret of becoming such a person.
If you want to become a great hunter and become very wise. Then you must learn from those in you pack.
you will not learn much from your playmates, they are not experienced. They have great energy, which often
gets them into trouble.
You must do as our young ones. Our young ones learn from the ones in our pack who have wisdom.
So as the boy grew he remembered what the wolves had told him.
He would listen closely as the older ones would speak and ask questions about the things that he didn't understand. He always wanted to know why thing were a certain way. He would pay close attention as the hunters would describe the events of there hunts.
When he became old enough to tag along with the hunters he always watched closely the very best hunters.
He was full of questions. Which annoyed some of the hunters but they were very tolerant of his curiosity for they knew that some day they would have to depend on the younger ones for there own livelihood.
So as the boy grew did the he realize his dream ? What do you think?
With that the old man arose and stretched and announced that it was passed his bed time. Tomorrow, Tomorrow I will tell you what happened to the boy.
The next morning the old man awoke to muffled voices outside his lodge. Wrapping his robe around his shoulders he stepped out into the brisk morning air. The children had been waiting for what seemed to them a very long time. As he looked around he beheld many anxious faces silently waiting to find out what happened to the boy. As they watched the old man waiting for him to answer the question from the night before ,they became aware of another figure. It was one of the bravest of all the warriors and a skilled hunter with much wisdom, as he approached the old man a smile came accosted his face. The young man placed his arm around the older mans shoulder ." Did you sleep well my father"? The old man without acknowledging the younger mans question turned his attention to the children smiling with pride behold "THE BOY" !
